World Sword Swallowers Day

Ever want to see one of those sword swallowing acts in person? Here’s your chance to check out World Sword Swallowers Day! In conjunction with the Sword Swallowers Association International (SSAI), Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium will be hosting this event Saturday, February2017 25th 2017.

In Orlando, Central Florida’s own Ted Campbell (aka “Will Rotten”) will demonstrate his amazing sword swallowing skills. He’ll be joined by other local sword swallowers, including Red Stuart, who will attempt to swallow more than 50 swords at one time! The show will start at 1:30 pm with the Big Swallow finale at 2:25 pm. The show is FREE and will take place at Ripley’s Orlando Odditorium.

On World Swallowing Day in previous years, 22 performers swallowed more than 138 feet of steel at 10 Ripley’s Odditoriums! Why is there a World Sword Swallower’s Day? “We sword swallowers risk our lives every time we swallow swords, but many people don’t believe it’s real, or they think the art has died out,” explains Dan Meyer, a sword swallower who has been featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not!. The day was initiated to “raise awareness of the medical contributions sword swallowers have made to the fields of medicine and science, to honor veteran performers, to raise funds for esophageal cancer research and the Injured Sword Swallower’s Relief Fund (with donations matched by Ripley’s), and to correct myths by putting on sword swallowing demonstrations for the public and media around the world.”

Sword swallowing originated in India before 2000 BC, and during these early times it was a demonstration of power. As it expanded over time and migrated to other countries, it became more of a theatrical event, and was introduced in America at the Chicago World’s Fair back in 1933.

“Sword swallowers and Ripley go way back to the very first Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium”, said Tim O’Brien, VP of Communications for Ripley Entertainment Inc. Back then, in 1933, three performers mesmerized the huge crowds and two of them were ladies!

You can see for yourself at either Central Florida Ripley’s Odditorium, the International Drive or St. Augustine locations, and see if you ‘believe it or not’.

Zipping over the crocs!

Hold on to your shoes! Don’t dangle your feet! Soon, you will be able to get your thrills by zipping over jumping crocodiles and alligators at the unique Gatorland attraction in Orlando. Known as the alligator capital of the world, Gatorland is home to thousands of gators, including the rare Albino gator. Plans for the new Screamin’ Gator Zip Line have made a few jaws drop when they mentioned they would be zipping directly over the alligator breeding marsh, jumping crocs, and through the parks’ bird rookery. The zip line tower tops out at 75 feet high, and park officials are excited that this new addition will allow people to really see some diverse animal habitats. (That is if you can keep your eyes open!)

This 110-acre Orlando theme park and conservatory has been here since 1949 and is also home to many birds, bears, crocodiles and more! Some of the exciting attractions here are the live shows such as the Gator Jumparoo and live Gator Wrestling. Park admission is not expected to change, but there will be an additional cost for the zip line experience. The Screamin’ Gator Zip Line should be open by June. Happy zipping!

Disney’s Renovation of Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom Orlando

A major renovation of Fantasyland has been in the planing stages for some time now, but now Disney has begun hiring contractors for the massive renovation. Starting in early 2012 Disney plans on opening it’s new Little Mermaid attraction and Pixie Hollow a new meet and greet area for Disney’s various fairies and princeses to interact with guests.

While Universal Orlando prepares to open it’s newest theme park within a theme park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in the coming weeks. The appeal at Universal Orlando’s expansion will be mainly aimed at boys.

Disney’s revamp of Fantasyland will be going after the girls. It should be interesting for families with boys and girls begining in 2012 with options for both girls and boys at Orlando’s two premier attractions. Start saving now or plan a trip this year to see the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and then plan on early 2012 to visit or revist the Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Hey Muggles! Harry’s Wizarding World is Offering Vacation Packages!

Hogwarts Castle at Universal Studios

Universal Studios offers vacation packages to visit Hogwarts

The announcement of vacation packages being offered by Universal Studio’s for their new Harry Potter theme park is pretty big news here in Orlando. We have heard “coming in Spring” for awhile now, but that date has been narrowed down with the offering of package deals starting May 28, 2010. Surely Universal wouldn’t offer packages without a park being open!!

The packages range from $285 per adult up to $1,548+ for a family of four. The package includes hotel room, park admission – 3 days – one day at each park, transportation from your hotel to the park and included in some packages, early admission into the park, breakfast at Three Broomsticks™ and a commemorative GRAND OPENING ticket. Air flights and more can be added. See more details here.

Universal has been hesitant to give out too much information about the park. Most of us are Muggles, afterall! Could the Hogwart’s castle be filled with secret passageways, talking portraits and headless ghosts? What will the Forbidden Journey™, Flight of the Hippogriff™ and Dragon Challenge™ be like? Universal claims the “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey” ride will surpass the Spiderman ride. Wow!

What will Butterbeer and Treacle Fudge taste like? What will the frogs be singing? Starting May 28, many wizards will be finding out! Instead of going to school on a train, vacationers will be flying on modern broomsticks to start their summer vacations in a wizarding world! Let’s just hope these seekers catch the snitches so Universal and Central Florida will emerge the winner!

Electrical Light Parade Coming Back to Orlando

Several years back the Electrical Light Parade was moved to Anaheim California but this summer it is coming back to Orlando. The night will again be lit at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World by multitudes of lighted floats. Billed as the summer of Nighttastic a rejuvenated parade returns to Orlando updated with all new LED lights. Many Disney fans are going to be delighted to see it’s return.

Disney is making a strategical move to help it’s key summer season business and my belief is it’s part of Disney’s plans to try and keep their key childrens market. They will be facing a huge new player when The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opens inside Islands of Adventure Universal Orlando this spring.

Speaking of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter have you seen Universal Orlandos new commercial that debuted during the first half of the Super Bowl? I have seen it one other time on TNT since then and the commercial almost makes it seem that it’s open but at the end of the commercial it says coming this spring. An official opening date has yet to be announced.

I will keep you posted and as soon as I hear the official opening date I will be sure and get it on the blog fast.
