Mango’s Tropical Café to Offer More Than It’s Menu

There are so many great places to eat in the Orlando area.  Nearly every type of cuisine can be found. Next year, a new restaurant will open on International Drive and offer something no other restaurant can – and it has nothing to do with the menu. Can you say South Beach?

Mango's Tropical Cafe in Orlando

Mango’s Tropical Café

Mango’s Tropical Café will be opening next year near the corner of I-Drive and Sand Lake Road. This is where the TGI Fridays restaurant used to be. Where Walgreens is now, will be relocated and a parking garage will be built in its place. What is the reason for all of the space and parking needs?

Not only will this area host a new restaurant, an entire entertainment complex is going to be built that will change the Orlando skyline. SKYPLEX will break ground in 2015 and will include the world’s tallest roller coaster, The Skyscraper™. It is named that because it takes up very little space on the ground, but is 570 feet tall! Next to it will be the Orlando Eye – 400-foot tall observation wheel scheduled to open in the first half of 2015.

Mango’s Tropical Café will include 55,000 square feet of entertainment space. You’ll be able to dine there, enjoy live entertainment, shop and experience South Beach without leaving Orlando. You’ll have the option to go on a thrill ride (before you eat if you have a weak stomach), dance and have a view like no other complex offers from the glass elevator ride 55 stories into the air.

Skyscraper Roller Coaster

The Skyscraper Roller Coaster

The world’s tallest roller coaster will send riders 50 stories into the air with incredible heart-pounding inside and outside loops, dives, spirals and inversions. The ride will last 3 minutes and will reach speeds of 65 mph. Details to note:

  • Over 50 stories tall
  • Price for unlimited rides is expected to be under $20
  • There will be full inversions on the coaster
  • Ride time will be around three minutes
  • Height requirement is expected to be 48 inches
  • The track will be 5,200 feet long
  • It will reach speeds up to 65 MPH

The ride is scheduled to open in 2016 with an estimated budget around $200 million. Mango’s Tropical Café will open before the ride is built next year. Construction is sure to complicate matters in this busy tourist area, so be prepared for a little inconvenience during this phase. Once complete, it is sure to be a great draw for the area.

Capone’s Dinner & Show is pleased to be located just down the road from International Drive. The location provides a quick trip for many tourists to get to our popular dinner show. Perhaps you’ll be able to see our location from the top of The Skyscraper once it is built. Until then, find us on our location page and enjoy a night away from South Beach at a fine 1930’s gangland Chicago establishment.

Spotlight: Coral Reef Restaurant at Epcot

The Coral Reef Restaurant is located at The Seas with Nemo & Friends Pavilion at Epcot theme park. This Orlando, Florida restaurant is best known for its stunning underwater views of the Caribbean Coral Reef.  Art deco tables and booths face a tank full of 85 species of tropical fish, sharks, rays and sea turtles.  You may even catch scuba divers swimming with them.  Be sure to ask for a table down front for the best view.

Appetizers include crab cakes, creamy lobster soup, and steamed mussels.  Entrees have plenty of seafood options including lobster ravioli, seared Scottish Salmon, and Grilled Mahi Mahi.  However, this is not a ‘seafood’ only restaurant, and non-seafood lovers have their choices of Grilled New York strip Steak, Roasted Pork Tenderloin, and Seared Chicken Breast. The kids menu includes cheese pizza, grilled chicken, and grilled fish of the day.  Visit the website for full menu.

As with most of the Disney restaurants, you can make reservations up to 180 days in advance, the restaurant is non-smoking, and the food is pricey.

While at Epcot, be sure to check out the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, running now through May 15th.  Of course, Epcot admission is required to eat at the Coral Reef, so if you are not visiting Epcot, be sure to check out Capone’s Dinner and Show for a fabulous, entertaining evening!

Spotlight: Mythos Restaurant at Islands of Adventure

Mythos Restaurant at Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure was named the world’s best theme park restaurant for six years running.  And, they just won again at the 2011 Foodie Awards.  This unique restaurant is located in the area of the lost city of Atlantis, and is one of only 2 full-service restaurants inside the park.  The exterior of towering rock formations with carved ancient figures, and cascading waterfalls set the mood for this dining experience.  Inside, you’ll enjoy the cavernous interior in what appears to be an enchanted cave, the walls of which morph from rocky surfaces to mystical faces and even into voluptuous bodies.  And, there’s an outdoor seating area with a spectacular view of the park’s sea and islands.

The menu consists of an eclectic assortment of food, ranging from hamburgers to sushi.  The gourmet cuisine includes blueberry and pistachio crusted grilled pork, cedar planked Bay of Fundy salmon, and imported pasta. Mouth-watering desserts and a full wine list are also available, as well as a separate children’s menu.  A full-service lunch is served daily.  The food is great, prices reasonable, and atmosphere pleasant.

Universal does offer a dining pass deal, which allows guests to enter the park to dine at the restaurant without paying for admission.   Here’s how it works: go to the guest services window and tell them you’d like to dine at Mythos. They’ll ask for a photo id and a credit card. They’ll ring up a charge ticket for the full park admission and give you a pass to enter the park and go to the restaurant. When you’re finished, you present the pass and proof that you purchased a meal at Mythos and they tear up your credit slip.   They give you about 2 ½ hours.  So, that’s a great way to enjoy the restaurant even if you are not visiting the theme park, enjoy!

Spotlight: Rainforest Café at Disney Springs

Well, it’s a jungle out there, especially if you’re dining at the popular Rainforest Café at Disney Springs. This Orlando restaurant is wildly decorated with lush tropical vegetation. It even has banyan trees and waterfalls! Just to make sure you feel like you’re in the actual rainforest, there are simulated thunderstorms, trumpeting elephants, gorillas, and animated animals roaming around.

Along with the ambiance, you’ll enjoy a variety of American fare, from salads and sandwiches to burgers, poultry dishes, as well as vegetarian selections and kid-friendly meals. The ‘Best of Citysearch’ and ‘Trip Advisor’ have given The Rainforest Café awards and Certificates of Excellence for being the best of family-friendly restaurants. So, enjoy a great meal, but leave room for dessert. Their signature dish is the Sparkling Volcano, which is a chocolate brownie with ice cream, whipped cream, caramel and chocolate sauce, yum!

There is also a retail village where you can find souvenirs for the whole family. Since this is such a popular place, you definitely want to make a reservation at the Disney reservation line: (407) 939-3463.  If you have any special dietary needs or allergies, they are happy to accommodate you; just let them know when making your reservation, which can be made up to 180 days in advance.
