Enjoy Getting to Know Other Guests at the Caribbean Carnaval Dinner Show!

Round tables, set for 10 guests, are elegantly set and provide a cozy atmosphere. The show itself is limited to about 150 people when food is served inside covered areas. At most about 200 guests can be accommodated including the outdoor patio area. This provides a nice atmosphere to get to know other guests.

Diners choose from a salad station, hot pots, a carving station and a min-dessert station. The menu is comprised buffet-style and includes dishes such as Ropa Vieja (shredded beef), tomato and sweet plantains, jerk chicken, grilled snapper, coconut rice, salads, sides and mini desserts. The Mojo-roasted suckling pig from the carving station draws a lot of attention. Sous Chef Carlos Castano states, “People are amazed to see the suckling pig.” There are plenty of options on the salad bar too, including grilled pineapple, organic greens, pinto bean and shrimp salad and more. Other venues on Universal Studios properties may feature a variation of one or two dishes, but most of these items can only be found at this Orlando dinner show.

Adults will enjoy the rum punch. They also provide a fruit punch which is alcohol-free. Limited beer and wine selections are also served. Kids attending the Caribbean Carnaval dinner show even get their own buffet!

An Island Escape

During dinner guests are entertained by performers mingling with the diners. You’ll be welcomed by a stilt walker and other friendly islanders. You may even have a custom song performed just for you!

Following dinner, a lively show is performed. Musicians and dancers take guests on a “tour” of the islands through song and dance. Many guests get in the action. Afterall, who can resist a congo line?

Savor the vibrant colors, delightful tastes and rich sounds by ‘escaping’ to the islands. Are you ready to do the limbo, jump into the conga line or take part in the festivities? Purchase your tickets. Call (407) 503-3463 or purchase online at universalorlando.com.

If you’d like to experience an evening during the prohibition era, Capone’s Dinner & Show is a short drive away from the Loews Sapphire Falls Resort. Al’s gang of goofy gangsters and delightful dancers are ready to take you back in time to the 1930’s Chicago gangland. Tickets are half price when purchased online. So enjoy the Caribbean Carnaval, then grab your gang and come to Capone’s. It’s a blast from the past.

Attraction Food News

When it comes to good food at Orlando’s attractions, we can expect a great experience most every visit regardless of the Orlando theme park, restaurant or attraction. We can also expect lots of new food items being served and introduced. Every once-in-a-while an entirely new restaurant opens which is the case this past week at Downtown Disney’s West Side and later this summer at Universal’s Diagon Alley.

Starbucks Opens at Downtown Disney

A new Starbucks is now open serving coffee, pastries and sandwiches at Downtown Disney’s West Side. This beautiful restaurant is large with an open plan and plenty of seating. It is about 3,900 square feet, which is much larger than most Starbucks restaurants. Not only is there a lot of air conditioned indoor seating, an outdoor patio with tables and a fireplace offer more seating options with a relaxing experience. It faces the lake and within view of the Characters in Flight tethered helium balloon rides.

Other unique features at this Starbucks include a lemongrass roof! Rich with coffee compost, this grass is environmentally-friendly preventing run off into the lake. Another unique feature is the electronic chalk board. Guests will have fun doodling on the board & also see a live view of a similar screen at Disneyland’s Downtown Disney in Anaheim, CA. One other extrememly unique feature at this Orlando restaurant is the long bench made of heart pine. Salvaged from the Alabama cotton mill, it is estimated to be 300 to 400 years old.

Hours for this new Starbucks are expanded too. It will be open from 10:00 a.m. to midnight every day. As with the Winter Park Starbucks, this restaurant will offer the chain store’s “reserve” coffee line. These rare coffees will be an exclusive to Disney’s Starbucks. The Magic Kingdom and Epcot Starbucks locations do not offer the reserve line. Plans for cafes at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom all include future Starbuck locations.

Menu and New Food Items Announced for Diagon Alley

Later this summer new dining options at Universal Studio’s new Diagon Alley will offer a British fare. One of the restaurants at this theme park will be the Leaky Cauldron. It will feature Cottage Pie, Beef, Lamb & Guinness Stew, Bangers and Mash, Split Pea Soup and a host of other dishes you’d expect to find in a British pub.

Unusual new food that will be on some of the menus at various restaurants and outdoor carts include Butterbeer Ice Cream, a host of unique Elixers and various draught beers. You will, no doubt, feel as if you’ve stepped into one of the Harry Potter movies and could possibly be rubbing elbows with Harry, Hagrid or the twins! There is a lot of anticipation to experience this new theme park. The best way to keep up with the development is to regularly visit Universal’s blog.

Meat carving station at Capone's Dinner & ShowCapone’s Dinner & Show continues with it’s revamped menu which includes a delicious meat carving station. As if the delicious dinner buffet didn’t offer enough selection, this station features smoked turkey, London broil steak and herb and cheese-stuffed roasted pork tenderloin. You can also create your own pasta dish from selections including Bucatini, Spaghetti, Linguini, Cavatappi and Macaroni, topped off with a sauce of your choice – Marinara, Alfredo, Cheese and Vesuvio herb butter sauce. The pasta is made from scratch, and doesn’t get any fresher than this!

If you are a ‘foodie’ or simply like to experience an attraction along with a meal, check out the new Starbucks at Disney, or make plans to visit the Leaky Cauldron once it opens, and definitely save a night for Capone’s Dinner & Show. This speakeasy offers a unique experience unlike any other chain restaurant or movie. Enjoy the attractions and eat well!

Spotlight: Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville

Enjoy a ‘visit to the islands’ and get yourself a famous ‘cheeseburger in paradise’ at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville at Universal Orlando CityWalk.  (Theme park admission is NOT required to enjoy CityWalk.)  This popular restaurant provides a laid-back atmosphere with indoor or outdoor seating, live music nightly, and a “Parakeet Beach” area for the little ones to enjoy.  The relaxing island attitude, with Buffet music playing is the atmosphere here.  The décor was inspired by Jimmy Buffet’s favorite waterfront concerts, and its 3 bars were themed to Buffet fans.  The Volcano Bar, the Land Shark Bar, and the 12 Volt Bar are all themed around Jimmy Buffett songs. The Volcano Bar is a fan favorite, complete with a giant exploding volcano that erupts periodically. Guess what is erupts with?  Margaritas, of course!

Along with the many varieties of award-winning margaritas and frozen concoctions, the menu features a combination of Caribbean and Key West cuisine.  Offerings include Conch Fritters, Jamaica Mistaica Wings, Corn and Crab Chowder, Bayou Shrimp Pasta, Jimmy’s Jammin’ Jambalaya, Calypso Mahi Mahi, Key Lime Pie, and, of course, the extremely popular Cheeseburger in Paradise®.  Click here for menu.

There are plenty of seating options – inside, outside, balcony, bar. The staff is friendly, the service and food good, and the staff is great about allowing healthier substitutions for things like French fries.  Right next to Margaritaville is the Lone Palm Airport, featuring Jimmy Buffett’s very own seaplane, the Hemisphere Dancer. This outdoor lounge and tiki bar serves a variety of drinks and quick eats under the wing of the plane.  You can also purchase merchandise at the Smuggler’s Hold store.  You can find Jimmy Buffet books and CDs, as well as hats, apparel, beach bags, magnets, decals, signs and wall hangings.

A few other fun facts: They hold the world record for the largest margarita ever made!  (Wonder how you volunteer to help them drink that.) Also, back in 1999, Radio Margaritaville premiered with the opening of the restaurant.  The show is still broadcast here Wednesday through Sunday.   And while it has been a number of years since Jimmy Buffet himself stopped by, members of the Coral Reefers usually swing through a few times a year.
There is live entertainment nightly starting at 10:00pm with a $7.00 cover charge (includes tax).

Spotlight: Mythos Restaurant at Islands of Adventure

Mythos Restaurant at Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure was named the world’s best theme park restaurant for six years running.  And, they just won again at the 2011 Foodie Awards.  This unique restaurant is located in the area of the lost city of Atlantis, and is one of only 2 full-service restaurants inside the park.  The exterior of towering rock formations with carved ancient figures, and cascading waterfalls set the mood for this dining experience.  Inside, you’ll enjoy the cavernous interior in what appears to be an enchanted cave, the walls of which morph from rocky surfaces to mystical faces and even into voluptuous bodies.  And, there’s an outdoor seating area with a spectacular view of the park’s sea and islands.

The menu consists of an eclectic assortment of food, ranging from hamburgers to sushi.  The gourmet cuisine includes blueberry and pistachio crusted grilled pork, cedar planked Bay of Fundy salmon, and imported pasta. Mouth-watering desserts and a full wine list are also available, as well as a separate children’s menu.  A full-service lunch is served daily.  The food is great, prices reasonable, and atmosphere pleasant.

Universal does offer a dining pass deal, which allows guests to enter the park to dine at the restaurant without paying for admission.   Here’s how it works: go to the guest services window and tell them you’d like to dine at Mythos. They’ll ask for a photo id and a credit card. They’ll ring up a charge ticket for the full park admission and give you a pass to enter the park and go to the restaurant. When you’re finished, you present the pass and proof that you purchased a meal at Mythos and they tear up your credit slip.   They give you about 2 ½ hours.  So, that’s a great way to enjoy the restaurant even if you are not visiting the theme park, enjoy!

Spotlight: Three Broomsticks Restaurant at Islands of Adventure

One of the newest Orlando theme park restaurants is the rustic tavern, Three Broomsticks, the official restaurant of Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey located at Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure.  It has already won runner-up in Orlando’s 13th annual Foodie Awards for Best Theme Park Restaurant.  This is a counter service restaurant, rather than full-service dining.  You order and pay at the counter and pick up your food at another counter, so reservations aren’t required.  However, I understand they will take a reservation the breakfast deal, which is a complimentary breakfast when you book your trip with Universal.

This is the place where you can dine on authentic British food and try the famous (non-alcoholic) Butterbeer.  Butterbeer is a butterscotch, carmel-y cream soda toped with a buttery, frothy, creamy head and together they are decadent and delicious!  You can also try the Pumpkin Juice, which is like liquid pumpkin pie, except not quite as sweet, but also wonderful and tasty!    Also served here are rotisserie smoked chicken, fish and chips, shepherd’s pie, turkey legs, fresh veggies, and more.  Of course, there is a children’s menu as well that includes kid favorites such as chicken fingers and macaroni and cheese.  At the back of the Three Broomsticks tavern, is where you’ll find the Hog’s Head Pub, where adults can sample a great selection of beers, as well as wine, spirits, and mixed drinks.

Although the food is very tasty, the atmosphere is the key ingredient to this place. It’s very charming and just what you imagine after reading the books.  Make sure you watch the walls as you can sometimes see an owl flying by or catch a house elf walking around upstairs!   You can choose to sit inside and enjoy the atmosphere or enjoy lakeside dining on the patio. Either way it is a charming experience.
