For local residents, summer is often a time when parents are desperately trying to find inexpensive fun things to do<\/strong>. Few families can afford multi-park passes to the Orlando theme parks<\/strong>. Even if they could, the cost to eat dinner<\/strong> meals or refreshments<\/strong> of any kind can really add up. Not to mention the gas to get there, parking fees, etc. Wise parents know that summer is a great time to introduce their children to a variety of learning experiences without the kids realizing they are learning something while doing it! Museums<\/strong> and parks<\/strong> are great fun and are often free. If you want to expose your children to theater<\/strong>, it too is now an affordable option.<\/p>\n

Remember reading to your kids when they were young? Remember the classic fairy tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs<\/em>? What a great story! July 7 through August 7 (except on Mondays) you can reintroduce your child to the little girl that lives in the woods and the wicked queen who wants to be the most beautiful woman in the kingdom. Being performed at the Lowndes Shakespeare Center<\/strong><\/a> at 812 East Rollins Street in Orlando, this production costs $9\/seat on week days and $10\/seat on weekends. Tip:<\/strong> Go to the event\u2019s web site and download a coloring sheet for your child to color. Bring it to the box office and you\u2019ll get $2 off one of your tickets! (subject to availability)<\/span><\/p>\n

The Orlando Shakespeare Theater<\/strong> is really upping the entire theater experience<\/strong> for children this summer with this production. Not only will kids see a great theater performance<\/strong>, they can participate in fairy tale readings at local businesses in the morning (July 9 at 11 am at the Barnes and Noble on Colonial Dr.) for free<\/strong>. Also free<\/strong> are smoothie samples at Saturday\u2019s 2pm matinee (July 9) and free<\/strong> gnome hats thanks to the Virgin Olive Market at all of the performances. It is nice to see the Orlando Magic\u2019s support of the Theater for Young Audiences Series as well as UCF and the United Arts of Central Florida. With their support and the State of Florida\u2019s Dept. of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Arts Council, many local youth will have fun this summer and be able to get involved with theater.<\/p>\n

Later in the Fall, the Theater for Young Audience Season will present a musical adaptation of Miss Nelson is Missing<\/em> (Oct. 20 – Nov. 19) and next year Charlotte\u2019s Web<\/em> (Mar. 29 – April 29). These shows are a great way to launch your child\u2019s appreciation for theater, not to mention an inexpensive evening for the entire family. Whether you are eating dinner at the nearby White Wolf Cafe, or the Wendy\u2019s down the street, dinner and a show<\/strong> is affordable fun for the entire family.<\/p>\n
