Tiffins is an Indian word for a lunchbox used by travelers or a mid-day meal. Fittingly, Tiffins restaurant is open for lunch (11:30am – 3:30pm) as well as dinner (4:00pm – 9:30pm). The 252-seat restaurant provides waterfront views with indoor and outdoor seating. It is located on Discovery Island within Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It is divided into “galleries” or dining rooms that focus on far-away lands. These galleries contain artwork inspired by these lands. Some of the art helped create the Animal Kingdom theme park’s design. All of those details! The galleries include:

  • Asia  featuring the Trek Gallery (74 seats)
  • Africa featuring the Safari Gallery (64 seats)
  • Grand Gallery (114 seats) which pays homage to animal species that the Disney Conservation Fund works to protect.

The menu also has vegetarian choices. Try the Roasted Market Vegetable Curry with Quinoa, Zucchini and Lime Chutney.

While the food selections come from all over the world, the beverage menu focuses on Africa, Asia and South America. Many handcrafted cocktails and beers are offered as well as non-alcoholic beverages. These include lemonades, teas and coffees. The beverage program at Tiffins Restaurant is unique. “…we don’t have another one like it at Disney,” said Master Sommelier Brian Koziol, Food & Beverage Concept and Development director for Disney Parks & Resorts. “The program will focus on environmentality: producers that focus on sustainability, organic wines, and bio-dynamic viticulture.”

New Theme Park Restaurants at Animal Kingdom

New theme park restaurants are opening nearly every month, and the new eateries and shops at Disney’s Animal Kingdom are worth checking out. From chain restaurants to unique sweet shops, you’ll find familiarity as well as never-before-experienced menus.  One thing is for sure, an animal appetite is sure to be tamed!

New Theme Park Restaurants include Starbucks Coffee Shop

On the familiar side of new theme park restaurants in Animal Kingdom is the Seattle-based company of Starbucks. This new chain restaurant opened in April and is now represented in all four Walt Disney World theme parks and two additional locations in Downtown Disney. (Starbucks are also located within Universal Orlando’s Islands of Adventure and Universal CityWalk). The Animal Kingdom Starbucks is located outside of the entrance to “Africa” on the west side of the Orlando theme park. You’ll find it as you approach the iconic Tree of Life, just before the bridge.

Disney Starbucks MugsUnique Souvenirs

Starbucks offers a unique souvenir at this store. The Disney “You Are Here” mugs come decorated according to the park you are in. The Animal Kingdom mug shows the Tree of Life, Expedition Everest, a jeep (Kilimanjaro Safaris) and a giraffe. They make great souvenirs.

Zuri’s Sweet Shop Now Open

Zuri's Sweet Shop

Zuri’s Sweet Shop is a new theme park restaurant and shop at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

In the Harambe Market within Disney’s Animal Kingdom, a new dessert shop recently opened called Zuri’s Sweet Shop. At this new theme park restaurant you’ll find dozens of never-before-experienced treats. In fact, the menu is raising all kinds of “stink.” Let me explain…

Editor’s Note: After only a few weeks Disney has announced that the poo desserts will no longer be offered. After testing (and maybe the publicity?), they will no longer restock these items.

Along with candy apples, chocolate bars, African-spiced popcorn, animal-shaped lollipops and 80 other new items, Zuri’s is now selling animal poop! Inspired by dropping of the large game animals of Africa, the chefs at Zuri’s decided to have fun and create desserts you won’t turn up your nose at. Four types of poo are offered at $3.99 per serving (enough for two people). Choose from giraffe, rhino/hippo, elephant and cotton-top tamarin. You’ll have fun just picking out the dessert, because you have to match the “poo” with the species! Ingredients include:

  • giraffe: pellets of fudge/brownie
  • rhino/hippo: chocolate fudge, caramel-brownie, peanut butter and oats
  • elephant: oats and peanut butter
  • tamarin: pretzels, chocolate-peanut butter fudge

The theme park shop is an experience all in itself. All of the sights, sounds and flavors of Africa can be experienced here. Be sure to try the African Spice popcorn. With just a hint of cardamom, it is very addictive. You might need to purchase an extra bag for later.

Allergy-Friendly Menus

In addition to the new restaurants, Disney has also started incorporating allergy-friendly menus within their theme parks. The menus have been tested for common food allergies and intolerances. So far, over a dozen locations have adopted the menu. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of the newest locations to offer one. If you or your child have a special dietary need, consult with a Cast Member. They can assist you or consult with a chef about your needs.

Tree of Life

If you’ve not experienced Disney’s Animal Kingdom recently, check it out. The Tree of Life’s roots have expanded and include new animal carvings. The 145-foot tall by 50 fee wide structure has more than 103,000 leaves and over 300 meticulously detailed animal carvings in its trunk and roots! Inside the tree is a theater where “It’s Tough to be a Bug!” is performed. There are dozens of places to grab a bite and a couple of very nice full-service restaurants.

Like all Disney theme parks, there is plenty to do and see. Now there is even more to taste. A full day is sure to leave you “pooped” and with a bag to take home as well!

Animal Kingdom to Add Avatar as New Orlando Attraction

Avatar land at Animal Kingdom

Copyright Disney Enterprises, Inc. All rights reserved.

Mark 2017 on your calendar. Avatar is coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It will be over three years before theme park goers can enjoy this new Orlando attraction, but a project this big and detailed will surely be worth the wait.

Over two years ago, Disney secured the theme park rights to this blockbuster film franchise. Our first look at this new attraction includes artistic renderings recently released by Disney, depicting guests totally immersed in “Pandora.” This is the fictional planet in which the 2009 film featured and will be the new area within Animal Kingdom. Park visitors will be able to walk among floating mountains with beautiful cascading waterfalls; float down a jungle river with bio-luminescent plants, and be able to soar in the sky on a new ride which will simulate riding a Banshee.

The attractions in Avatar Land will include at least these four experiences:

  1. A soaring-style attraction
  2. An immersive boat ride
  3. A walk-through attraction
  4. Multiple themed restaurants and stores

Avatar is currently the highest grossing movie of all time. How Disney will make it suitable for young children is to focus on the imaginative creatures, intriguing characters and the strong theme of family and loyalty. They will not focus on the plot of the movie. The issue will be when a young child experiences the theme park and then asks to see the movie! What will parents say? Perhaps the movie sequel in this franchise slated to be out in December of 2016, will focus on less violence.

When choosing which Orlando attractions to visit, we hope that guests to the Orlando area will keep in mind that Capone’s Dinner & Show is friendly for all ages to experience! A perfect way to enjoy a day at the theme parks is to visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom during the day followed by an evening at this Orlando dinner show!

The addition of Avatar/Pandora will help Animal Kingdom’s night-time attendance. Some guests attending this Orlando theme park feel it is currently a half day or short day attraction. Some days during the year, it closes as early as 5:00 p.m. With a nighttime show with floating lanterns, water screens and glowing creatures, Disney will captivate their guests for several more hours. In some ways, this new Orlando attraction may even be better experienced at night! A lot of focus is going into new technologies in the park’s development and nighttime features are sure to benefit.

Some people are concerned about the safety and health of the real animals at this Orlando theme park. The additional hours and noises could possibly impact them. Pandora’s animals are imaginary creatures, so there is no concern about their addition.  Disney has assured us that the real animals will be taken to an area away from the night activities and not suffer in any way. Time will tell.

This new attraction coming to Orlando will be an exciting one to experience. Waiting more than 3 years will be the hardest part! During the coming years, parts of Animal Kingdom will be under construction and not so attractive. Let’s just hope anyone visiting this theme park between now and when Avatar Land opens will excuse the dust and return to see the final product. By the way, 2017 will also mark the year when the Orlando International Airport’s expansion is set to be complete. The expansion almost doubles the airport’s capacity…perhaps to accommodate all of the Avatar fans!

Babies, Babies Everywhere, but will you get a peek?

Baby gorilla and rhino photos from Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom welcomes their newest bundles of joy!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom has had a few visits from the stork already this year. Early January a baby white rhino arrived, then in February both a baby gorilla and a white-cheeked gibbon arrived! While these baby animals are adorable to look at, getting a look can be a challenge.

The little rhino is still “backstage” away from the rest of the herd with her mother, so seeing her may have to wait a few more weeks. The little gibbon arrived Feb. 2 and park guests may be able to see him in their habitat near the Kali River Rapids attraction. The rare baby gorilla born February 19 may be spotted along the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail. However, the proud (and protective) first-time mother keeps the baby so close that we don’t even know the gender yet!

If seeing these little ones is a priority, go online and create a customized map of these park locations, have it sent to you online or through the mail. Pretty cool. If you’ll be visiting several Disney parks during your stay, look into purchasing “The Complete Walt Disney World 2010” book ($24.95 retail) which contains a LOT of useful information, including an Animal Kingdom habitat map to help spot your favorite exotic creature. I found the book online for less $ at Books-A-MillionThis book can really save you a lot of time and money with it’s useful tips.

So map out where these babies are located in the park, get your telephoto lens ready and hopefully you’ll be able to get a peek at these adorable little bundles of joy! (Just in case, we’re including a photo. LOL)

Attraction Spotlight Disney’s Animal Kingdom is the newest of Disney’s Orlando theme parks

Tree of Life

Disney created the Animal Kingdom theme park with something for everyone to enjoy. One of the main attractions is the Wild Africa Trek where you get to see numerous breeds of exotic animals in open spaces – not in cages. This is a separately ticketed safari and last 3 hours. Well worth it if you have older children that love wild animals.

Animal Kingdom is home to more than 1,700 animals within 250 species! Baby Rhinos and other rare animals are born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom nearly every year. Kudos to Disney for not caging the animals and for their breeding program, which helps keep animals from extinction. The Orlando theme park is broken up into 6 “lands:” Oasis, Discovery Island, Africa, Rafiki’s Planet Watch, Asia and DinoLand, USA.

Because it’s Disney you know they have some fabulous live shows (not involving the animals). These fantastic shows and superb talent are enjoyed by a wide age group of guests visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Thrilling stunts, acrobatics and great musical productions make their shows hits!

If you like rides, Disney’s Animal Kingdom offers a nice variety of ride attractions – from lame to not-quite-tame. Rides fall into categories such as big drops, small drops, thrill rides, slow rides, water rides, spinning, dark, loud and scary. Some of the more popular attractions include:

  • Kilimanjaro Safari
  • Maharajah Jungle Trek
  • Dinosaur
  • Tree of Life
  • Wildlife Express Train
  • It’s Tough to be a Bug

If you are an animal lover, Disney’s Animal Kingdom could very well end up being your favorite theme park in Orlando. You may also want to check out Sea World, Discovery Cove or one of the many other animal attractions in Orlando.
