National Roller Coaster Day: Orlando Attractions Rate High

Today is National Roller Coaster Day. It is celebrated, because August 16th of 1898, was the day in which Edwin Prescott submitted a patent for the first looping roller coaster. It later became the loop-the-loop at Coney Island. So to celebrate, National Roller Coaster Day was born.

National Roller Coaster Day

When the Wise Guys originally started following National Roller Coaster Day in 2013, the folks that operate Behind the Thrills website, polled their readers. They announced the top 10 roller coasters in the United States. Our Central Florida theme parks were the best! In fact, SeaWorld Orlando landed two of the top ten. Busch Gardens, Islands of Adventure, Disney World and Hollywood Studios were also awarded a spot in the top ten.

The poll included the highest ranking roller coasters by various organizations. They were sectioned into wooden rides and steel roller rides. Our Florida theme parks did well with Rock-n-Roller Coaster in 10th place; The Incredible Hulk in 6th; Montu took 5th; Kraken was 4th and the number one roller coaster at that time was Manta.

National Roller Coaster Day Features New Rides

Zoom, loop, drop or barrel roll ahead a few years and National Roller Coaster Day looks a little different for Orlando’s theme parks in 2016. SeaWorld has added Mako. Universal Studios has added Skull Island: Reign of Kong. Busch Gardens has added Cobra’s Curse, and Disney added Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in 2014. The competition is steep and Central Florida has a lot more of it! Theme parks across the country are upping the standards with new thrills and technology.

“The virtual reality roller coaster experience is a new hot trend that hit the market this year and has the potential to be game changing,” says Colleen Mangone, spokeswoman for the International Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions.

No doubt the new roller coasters in Central Florida will rank high. They continue to be a big draw for many tourists. Why else would our theme parks be adding and improving them? If you are a roller coaster junky, you’ll no doubt be celebrating National Roller Coaster Day with a few minutes spent on your favorite thrill ride. Enjoy the day and the ride!

Celebrate Other Specials on the Calendar

Today has also been designated as “National Tell a Joke Day” and “National Rum Day” as well as a host of other holiday’s you’ll not find on most calendars. For thrill-seekers in Florida, you can feel lucky to have so many great roller coasters in the area to seek that thrill from. There are also plenty of places to hear and joke and drink rum.

Meanwhile, at Capone’s Dinner & Show, we are unable to help you celebrate National Roller Coaster Day. However, we’ll help you celebrate National Rum Day as well as National Tell a Joke Day. Come in tonight, or any night of the year and we’ll treat you to Al’s famous unlimited rum runners. The show is a thrill for many of our families, without the gForces, of course! Many guests do have a blast here! As for National Tell a Joke Day, well, come see the show at Capone’s. We’re sure to tell a joke or two!

Forever Florida Cypress Canopy Cycle Adventure

Cypress Canopy CycleIn July of 2011, Florida EcoSafaris introduced a new eco-adventure now called a Cypress Canopy Cycle. At the time, Florida EcoSafaris called it a Cypress FlyCycle or SkyCycle adventure. A few things have changed. Florida EcoSafaris has merged under one entity called Forever Florida. Additionally, the Cypress Canopy Cycle, which has been inactive for the past year, has had some updates made to it. Now it is back up and running, um,  peddling.

What is a Cypress Canopy Cycle?

The Cypress Canopy Cycle is a one-passenger reclining cycle that is suspended beneath a steel cable. Customers pedal themselves through a one-hour course (possibly faster) that goes through some gorgeous parts of the Forever Florida Wildlife Conservation Area in Kissimmee, Florida. This nature park includes pine flatwoods, forested wetlands and a pond that’s home to George, a 13-foot alligator.*

The course covers varied heights allowing you to experience different levels of this natural attraction. The adventure reaches treetop heights up to 25 feet. The Cypress Canopy Cycle can be enjoyed by guests ages 8 and up who weigh between 70 and 265 lbs. It’s as easy as peddling a bicycle and requires no steering at all! Just peddle away.

Reserve Your Adventure

When introduced, the Cypress Canopy Cycle was the second course of its kind in the world, and the first in Florida. Therefore, it isn’t every day that you get the chance to do this type of excursion! Tickets for the Cypress SkyCycle cost $39.99 per person. Combo tickets that include the cycle adventure and zip lines have been offered in the past. Look for them to return. Other ticket combinations include horseback safaris and coach safaris. Reservations are required and can be made by dialing 407-957-9794 or toll-free 866-85-4-EVER.

This one-hour experience has been very well received. The only thing that could make it better (in my opinion) would be a cycle built for two. Hanging from a wire all by myself for an hour looking at all of Florida’s wonders would be nice to share with a friend. Then again, some tourists may be looking for an excuse to get away for an hour by themselves! Good idea. Enjoy.

After hanging around enjoying Florida’s natural beauty, stop by Capone’s Dinner & Show for a fun dinner out. Save 50% off tickets by using our coupon or ordering your tickets online. Hang around with our wise guys; your gang will love it!

Spotlight: Mako Roller Coaster – SeaWorld

On June 10, 2016, SeaWorld Orlando opened a new attraction, the Mako Roller Coaster. It is (for now) the tallest, fastest and longest roller coaster among Orlando’s theme parks. It is so unique, it is classified as a “hypercoaster.” What makes Mako so hyper?

Mako Roller Coaster Facts:

  • it has a height of 200 feet
  • no inversions, yet you’ll experience plenty of weightlessness
  • nine moments of air time
  • no shoulder harnesses, only lap constraints
  • lockers are available near Mako’s entrance to store items that may fall out of pockets during your air time
  • high speeds – up to 73 mph
  • track is 4,760 feet long (nearly a mile)
  • the experience lasts about 3 minutes
  • 3 coaster trains with 7 cars per train and each train can carry up to 28 riders
  • Each coaster train weighs 21,418 lbs.
  • Must be 54” tall to ride

Even before and after riding the Mako Roller Coaster, you can become totally immersed in an all-new realm. A realm of sharks! Within the queue (line to wait in for the ride), you’ll experience a 48,000-watt, intelligent surround-sound system that plays an original soundtrack. This soundtrack was inspired by sharks and is 32 minutes in length. There are interactive learning stations where guests can learn about different species of sharks. In addition, they can learn what sharks eat, facts & myths, and how humans are a threat to some sharks to the point of extinction. Very interesting.

Learning About Sharks

As with any experience at SeaWorld, expect a great learning opportunity now that the Mako realm has been added. An all-new Shark Touch Pool is now open. Guests can now touch a shark! Guests can also learn about and interact with other sharks (brown-banded bamboo sharks, white-spotted bamboo sharks, and epaulet sharks) at the Relaxation Station located near Wild Arctic. This newly added realm is all about sharks, and because of this, it is thrilling and creates quite a ripple.

The Mako Roller Coaster is a great reason to revisit this Orlando theme park. It is a roller coaster to put on your must-do list. If you enjoy thrill rides, you can also experience these other roller coasters while you are at SeaWorld:

  • Kraken – floorless ride with open-air seating.
  • Manta – head-first, face-down through inversions and loops.
  • Journey to Atlantis – water coaster.
  • Shamu Express – perfect for younger children.

Mako sharks, also called “blue pointers,” are known for their speed and ability to quickly change course to pursue their prey.

Now you can experience the Mako shark’s movements to some degree by riding the Mako Roller Coaster. It will leave you breathless. For tickets and additional information on Mako and other attractions, visit

Orlando Zip Line Attractions: The Thrill of Nature

Nearly every Orlando vacation consists of seeing major theme parks and water parks, however, have you ever considered visiting one of the Orlando zip line attractions? When people plan a vacation, it usually consists of seeing the famous theme parks. A different kind of Orlando attraction many people do not consider is Zip Lines. Most Orlando zip line attractions center around nature and the thrill of viewing it from above.

Orlando zip line attractions show off Florida nature.

With all the focus of the thrill being on “death defying” drop offs and being turned upside down on roller coasters, a new type of thrill is becoming popular in Central Florida. Zip Lines add to the thrill by allowing a person to fly through the air at 25mph, attached to a line only by a harness. Now that is a real thrill ride.

Choices for Orlando Zip Line Attractions

There are four major Orlando Zip Line attractions to choose from. Several are within a short drive of the Orlando attraction area. Due to their popularity, more zip lines will most certainly be added to various Central Florida attractions.

  1. Florida EcoSafaris
  2. Zip Orlando
  3. Screamin’ Gator Zip Line
  4. Zoomair Sanford

Most locations also offer more than just a fly on a line through the air. They offer other things to see and fun things to do. Many offer a nature experience unique to Florida. The zip line being the main focus though, it should not be overlooked.

Most Popular Zip Lines

Florida Eco Safaris has you soaring 68 feet off the ground along seven different Zip Lines and three sky-bridges. Being scared of heights is not an option at this park. An Orlando attraction to surpass any, it does offer a Cypress Canopy Cycle Zip Line for those not wanting to soar across the tree tops by a harness. On this cycle line, people are able to sit and pedal the way across the tree tops while suspended from high tension steel cables.

This nature park is home to the first major Zip Line roller coaster in the United States, The Rattlesnake. Along with The Rattlesnake, four other Zip Line adventures are available.

Also at this Zip Line Orlando attraction, Coach Safaris and Horseback Safaris are available. For one admission price into the park, a person can view the conservation wildlife areas at the 4700 acre eco-ranch in a new way. This untouched area includes Cypress Domes, Pine Flatwoods and Marsh. Soaring across the tree tops, or on a safari, a person is given the opportunity to a lot. Nature offers black bears, alligators, the endangered Florida panther and over 200 species of birds in a safe habitat.

This zip line park, although located in the Orlando/Kissimmee area (St. Cloud/South Osceola County), it is still a great Orlando attraction that should not be overlooked. The great thing about this park is that it involves day and moonlight night packages. Another amazing fact about this nature viewing area is that it donates thirty percent of its revenue back into conserving the surrounding wetland areas.

Family Thrills for All Ages

Visiting famous theme and water parks should be the main focus of your vacation to Orlando. However, do not forget to add Orlando zip line attractions to your agenda. Viewing endangered wildlife conservation sites is a wonderful learning experience for the entire family. Being able to see all this while soaring across the tree tops at 25 mph, now that is another thrill all on its own.
