If you like Jazz music and want to go to the beach this weekend, you’ll not want to miss the New Smyrna Beach Jazz Fest. This annual event will be held Friday, September 23 through Sunday, September 25 and is dedicated this year to Harold Blanchard, New Smyrna’s “Ambassador of Jazz.” He performed at the festival every year from 2001-1020 and passed away last December.

Many shows are free, however, kick-off concert tickets are $20 on the day of the event which starts at Toni & Joe’s Patio, 309 Buenos Aires at 5:30pm – 7:30pm and is followed up at So Napa Grill, 3406 S. Atlantic Ave. at 8:00pm – 11:00pm.  The tickets are good for the entire weekend for any ticketed concert.

There are plenty of free concerts too. You can visit almost any restaurant/bar along Flagler avenue and catch a show including the Flagler Tavern, Gnarly Surf Bar & Grill, Traders Sports Pub, Peanuts, OM Bar & Chill Lounge, Clancy’s Cantina, Seaside Station, That’s Amore and the Grille at Riverview. The Atlantic Center for the Arts and The Fish House on Riverside Drive will also be hosting events. Locations on 3rd Avenue include The Garlic and So Napa.

This year’s festival poster features art created by Everett Spruill of Orlando and is title “Rhythm of Life.” It illustrates what the New Smyrna Beach Jazz Festival is all about, a jazz band performing at an intimate indoor event. Everett Spruill will have a booth set-up just east of the Wicker Basket Boutique selling  his art work and signing this years print.

I can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend; or just an afternoon. Visit the beach, relax, breathe in the warm salt air and listen to the beautiful sounds of jazz. There are plenty of performers, so check out the web site at newsmyrnabeachjazzfestival.com, pick out a performance or two and enjoy!
