Temperatures in our area haven’t exactly “plunged” like those up north, but in a few weeks several of our local’s bravest will be taking a plunge for a good cause. The annual Special Olympics Polar Plunge at Aquatica takes place February 1, 2014. If you want to participate, now is the time to get serious about getting your pledges.

What is the plunge? If you’ve been to Aquatica, you’ll know that the water is heated and an enjoyable experience all year round. However, on this day, the theme park turns the heat down on their wave pool for a “thrill of the chill” experience. Luckily the other rides will be kept at their normally pleasant temperatures.

Polar Plunge incentives

For those participants that raise at least $100, they’ll gain entrance into the Orlando water park. They’ll also get an official Polar Plunge T-shirt and a couple of passes for their very own cheering squad. Spectators can really get into the spirit too. Costumes are plenty and make for a great time.

There are many charities in which to donate to this time of year. If you’ve not decided where you’d like to donate a few extra dollars, check out the Plunge site PlungeFl.org and be generous. If you know of a friend, family member or co-worker that is participating, even better! They will have their own page in which you can donate to. If you want to spectate, or just make a donation, you can become a “virtual plunger” for a $100 donation. The Special Olympics is a great charity to give to, and by making a donation, this organization can reach more disabled people who might wish to participate in sports. In four years, the Polar Plunge has raised more than $750,000 for the athletes of Special Olympics Florida.

If you will be visiting the Orlando water park and participating in the Polar Plunge on February 1st, the folks at Capone’s Dinner & Show would like to offer you a hot cup of Joe at their joint after the event (or perhaps another type of adult beverage to warm your spirits). “We extend a special invitation to join Al and the gang that evening for a dinner & show. We’ll give you a warm welcome. When making your reservation, please let us know that you are a ‘plunger’ and how much money you helped raise for this good cause. We’ll announce your name on the evening of February 1st, and let everyone know of your great accomplishment.”
