Every theme park offers costume events or terror-related experiences. I get scared just driving down I-4, so I would much rather skip this holiday and find a fun Halloween alternative!

Scary Things to do in Orlando & Nearby
There are plenty of scary things to do, other than events at the theme parks. Just up the road, in Cassadaga are all types of spiritual encounters. Did you know that there are several haunted places in and around Orlando? There are several tour companies that will guide you through various haunted places in Orlando, Kissimmee, Tampa, and Ybor City. There is even a cemetery that offers tours that can raise the hair on the back of your neck. Furthermore, if you are interested in weird, spooky experiences, check out Spook Hill in Lake Wales. Even the old abandoned KSC Launch Pad of Apollo 1 is believed to be haunted by ghosts of three astronauts who lost their lives in a tragic fire.

- Crowne Plaza – vague reports of a ghostly entity inhabiting room 621.
- Super 8 International Drive – room 206 has long been considered a haunted hot spot in this Orlando hotel.
- Peabody Hotel (rebranded to Hyatt) – built in 1986, there are claims that a number of people have committed suicide in the building over the years, and that their spirits can sometimes be seen roaming the hallways.
Halloween Alternatives That are Not Scary
Halloween alternatives are events that are not scary, but still Halloween-related. You can participate in several 5K runs and walks scheduled for this weekend. Runners and walkers will be in costume. They contribute to charities that really need our support. Then there are costume contests you can find in nearly every neighborhood, town, and county. There are even costume contests for pets! Another Halloween alternative involves trick-or-treating in shopping centers and malls. Fun and safe for your children, with the added benefit of getting a jump on your holiday shopping!
Best Halloween Alternative That Has Nothing to do with Halloween
If you avoid frights whenever possible, Halloween is a great opportunity to check out an Orlando dinner show. There are several to choose from, but the best value is Capone’s Dinner & Show. Instead of a sinking feeling in your stomach from the result of pure terror, your belly may jiggle from all of the laughter. It’s fun. Not frightful. I think there are a lot of folks out there like me, who’d rather skip the candy handouts and tricks being played upon them. Instead, enjoy an evening out celebrating an era of our history when prohibition (not witches) ruled.

At Capone’s Dinner & Show, you can purchase your tickets in advance and receive 50% off. Besides being fun, it is the best value of all the Orlando dinner shows. If the joint is open (currently closed on Mondays) you decide to take in the show on Halloween night (if it doesn’t fall on a Monday), you may even get a treat to take home (not the candy-kind either). No tricks involved! You may have to skip the sweets after you hit the delicious 4-course dinner. Dessert is offered…if you have room! The drinks will keep coming all evening too. The wait staff works very hard to accommodate every guest, even if they do have that ‘made’ attitude. It’s all part of the act, so loosen up and enjoy!

Finally, Capone’s is a great Halloween alternative in Orlando. Kids enjoy it too, but you may have a hard time getting them to a dinner theatre on Halloween night. The good news is, that Capone’s is open nearly every night of the year, so bring the kids some other evening. On October 31st (not open if Halloween falls on a Monday), turn off your porch lights and come to Capone’s. They’ll have a treat waiting for you and promise not to scare you away!
