Another year, another price increase at Orlando’s theme park Disney World. If history repeats itself, this means that in the coming weeks, most of the other major theme parks will also be raising their prices. I would also look for some of the smaller attractions to raise their prices this year too. Based upon the increase in tourism (this past year Orlando did very well), despite the economy, tourist attractions should not suffer much, if at all, from these price hikes.

Mickey MouseThe cost for a single-day ticket for an adult at Disney was raised just $4. Not a shocker until you see the cost of the ticket at $99 (plus tax)! Children’s ticket prices also went up by a few dollars with their cost now at $93 (plus tax). Prices for all of the Disney parks were raised. The multi-day ticket prices and Park Hopper passes (allowing guests to visit more than one theme park during a day) also went up in cost. Even the annual passes for Florida residents were raised by $10. See more prices on Disney’s website.

Disney’s response to these prices? “Our pricing reflects the high quality and breadth of experiences we offer and our ongoing commitment to investing in our parks. We offer a variety of ticket options that provide a great value, and find that most guests select multi-day tickets that offer additional savings.” This is a similar statement to the price increases made each year for the past several years. They do offer a great experience, just not all people can afford to experience it.

Will the higher costs result in fewer guests? That is to be seen. It is doubtful that attendance will change much. Families that plan a Disney vacation often look at it as a one-time event. If the prices were lower, they might plan a return visit the following year. I know of several families (many years ago) that went to Disney for their vacation each summer. Those days are long gone for most families. It is simply too expensive to attend the theme parks, stay at the resort and fly or drive to the Central Florida area.

Orlando theme parks will continue to offer discounted theme park tickets in the way of packages, annual passes and other specials such as the Florida resident special. It is the best way for the attractions to stay busy throughout the year. Local residents know when the busiest times of the year are and will avoid paying such a high price to go when they know they will stand in long lines. These dates are often blacked out anyway for pass holders.

If a Disney vacation is in your plans this year, save up. While it might be a little more expensive, you are still going to have a vacation of a lifetime. Do your homework and shop around for the best theme park ticket deals. Otherwise, the kids may be grown and gone by the time your family can afford it!
