This St. Patrick’s Day people all over the Central Florida area will be celebrating their Irish heritage. Even if they’re not Irish, they’ll celebrate. There is quite a bit of history about Irish mobsters and gangs since the Irish Mob is one of the oldest organized crime groups in the United States. Irish gang members from that time consisted of “Big” Bill Dwyer (New York’s leading bootlegger during the early years of Prohibition), Owney “The Killer” Madden, Frank Costello, Jack “Legs” Diamond, “Little” Augie Pisano, Charles “Vannie” Higgins and the renegade mobster Vincent “Mad Dog” Coll. Aren’t their names fun to say out loud? Although initially successful in keeping their Italian rivals at bay, unstable leadership and fighting within their own gang proved their downfall.
